HOW TO ADOPT
The Allegany County Shelter is always full of wonderful dogs and cats available for adoption. Our staff is able to help people to ensure their new family member has a successful transition into a permanent and loving home.
Step 1: Prepare for your visit.
You will need to bring photo identification with your current address. This could be in the form of a current tax bill, deed, etc. If living with parents, parents must give permission. Adoptees must be 18 years or older. An adoption application can be downloaded here.
Step 2: Come visit the animals or view their profiles online.
Come to the shelter and visit with our animals. Our staff can give you any available medical and behavioral information on the animals to help you make a decision on what animals is right for you.

Step 3: Take home your new family member.
We try very hard to show the animals that appear to be healthy and adoptable. However, in spite of our best efforts, it is impossible to guarantee that every animal adopted will have a clean bill of health. You must take your new pet to a veterinarian within 14 days to have it checked.

Adoption Fees
All Dogs: $125
Cats: $100
Why Does The Shelter Charge an Adoption Fee?
Our adoption fees cover some of the costs that ensue as we care and house the homeless animals that come through our doors. Fees also help subsidize medical care and evaluation of the animals. Each adopted pet is spayed/neutered, up-to-date on shots and microchipped. Dogs receive their county license. Those are expenses that we cover through our adoption fee. There are always expenses associated with pets. We do not make a profit. We require funds to continue rescuing animals and doing what is necessary to find each and every animal the right home for a long and happy life!
We’re also proud to offer great adoption programs like these:
Seniors for Seniors – In order to help our fabulous senior pets find homes faster and to encourage people of all ages to adopt, we have a program called Seniors for Seniors. Adoption fees will be waived for senior citizens 60 and over adopting dogs or cats 5 years or older.
Pets for Vets – We are proud of our military and thank you for your service. We would like to extend our gratitude by offering Pets for Vets. Pets for Vets unites our current and veteran members of the military with a companion dog or cat with no adoption fees. Bring a copy of your DD214 or military ID.
Information regarding the adopter of any animal from the Allegany County Animal Shelter is regarded as confidential and will not be released without a court order.
